A Joseph Rowntree Foundation report by urban experts shows deprived urban areas have suffered cuts six times higher than wealthier areas. Newcastle City is one of the urban areas examined in the report published on 10th March 2015. The cuts have affected the provision of services related to housing, planning and social care badly.
Professor Annette Hastings from the University of Glasgow who co-authored the ‘Cost of the Cuts’ report for the JRF, warned if the pace of cuts was not slowed down councils could soon reach a point of no return. She said: “Some councils aren’t going to be able to continue to make the savings required without really damaging services. Needs are going to go un-met unless there is a re-think on the scale of cuts.” http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/report-reveals-north-east-among-8819667
The report uses four case study councils to assess the impact of cuts and commends Newcastle City Council for its imaginative approach.
