Bedroom ‘tax’ welfare changes hit tenants

Newcastle Chronicle reports (10 April 2014) annual figures from Your Homes Newcastle (for Feb 2013-14) show:

  • 60% of tenants hit by the so-called bedroom ‘tax’ are in arrears;
  • At the end of February there were 3,558 people looking for a one-bed home compared to 576 searching for a three-bed house;
  • The number of empty two and three-bed flats has gone up from 47 last year to 142 this year.
