Ponteland is a small town to the north west of Kingston Park and within easy commuting distance of Newcastle.  It is an attractive and affluent place where many of Newcastle’s wealthier live.  Developers Lugano hoped to build 280 houses on a rural site on the southern edge of the Darras Hall area of Ponteland.  Northumberland County Council turned down the plans but Lugano plan to appeal.  Among the protesters were Ponteland Greenbelt Group: http://www.pontelandgreenbelt.co.uk/

“Lugano had been seeking outline planning permission for the development at Birney Hill Farm, with the proposal covering the demolition of some buildings, plus provision of office, retail, educational or community facilities and a community farm.   However, 4,310 letters were submitted in opposition to the choice of site. Newcastle International Airport, the Environment Agency, the county council’s strategic housing, conservation, public protection and flood management departments, also objected.”
